INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS
This pack is intended to introduce you to the general operations of the club. It is particularly designed for new members who have little experience of other golf clubs. We hope that you will find it useful.
You are joining around 200 other shareholders / members who have been enjoying the fantastic golf facilities since 2001. Ours is a new club, eager to make its mark and develop into an outstanding sports facility. We plan to provide every opportunity for you to play many hours of great golf.

Application Procedure
In joining Millicent Golf and Country Club you are joining two distinct groups. First and foremost, you become a shareholder in Millicent Golf and Country Club Plc. Secondly, you can apply for membership of the ‘men’s club’. Although a shareholder, you must apply formally to the men’s golf club. (An application form is included in this pack). If you do not already have an official handicap, one will be awarded to you after you return three scorecards from the course.
You may choose to postpone your membership of the men’s club. In this case it may be possible to ‘transfer’ your membership to someone else for a period of no less than one year. You remain a shareholder but the transferee holds the playing rights and must pay the appropriate subscriptions
It is our express intention to establish a ladies’ golf club with full affiliation to the ILGU when sufficient numbers of female golfers join. For the interim this document relates only to male golfers.
Company and club structures
Your primary investment is a ‘Non Cumulative Preference Share’ in Millicent Golf and Country Club PLC (hereafter referred to as "The Company"). This investment is used to further the development of the golf course and facilities. The land is leased (long term) by Millicent Golf & Country Club PLC from Mr. Derek Killian.
An annual subscription to "The Company" falls due each January and entitles you to free golf and use of club facilities for one year. This subscription to the company pays towards the day-to-day maintenance of the golf course and management of the clubhouse and other facilities.
You are also taking up membership of "The Men's Club". This entitles you to participation in all competitions run by The Men's Club, Open competitions run by other clubs, GUI affiliation, GUI handicap and insurance cover. For this you pay a second subscription. The "Men’s Club" look after the golfing affairs of the members - running club competitions, managing members’ handicaps, interclub competitions, liasing with GUI etc.
The organisation of The Men’s Club is facilitated by ‘the men’s club committee’, membership of which is elected at the AGM in December of each year. All fully paid-up members of The Men’s Club are entitled to nominate or be nominated for a position on the committee. Sub committees may operate from time to time to focus on particular matters of exclusive concern to the ‘men’s club’.
The official link between the Men’s club and the company is the "Council" consisting of representatives of the Men's Club and the Company. This meets on an irregular basis to discuss important matters which affect both the Men's Club and the company.
Subscriptions
Annual subscriptions are payable to both the company and the golf club. They fall due on Jan 1st each year and are collected no later than the end of March each year. Late payment may result in a penalty or sanction such as loss of handicap. The company’s subscription goes towards the costs of the maintenance and development of the golf course and facilities. A ‘levy’ may be charged, redeemable against clubhouse facilities. The ‘men’s club’ subscription covers its administrative costs and the mandatory GUI membership fee and players’ insurance as well as some vouchers for competitions.
Both subscriptions are collected together. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Millicent Golf and Country Club’.
Full, audited accounts are presented by both the company and the ‘men’s club’ at their respective AGMs.
Competition fees are payable each time you choose to enter a competition among members
Members’ Competitions
Members’ Competition times are posted on the notice board in the clubhouse. A time sheet is available on request in the clubhouse. Members are strongly encouraged to participate in all club competitions.
Members are asked to be responsible for their own tee times and turn up for play at least 15 minutes prior to tee time.
It is extremely important that players unable to make their tee time notify the clubhouse in sufficient time out of respect for the Golf Club and their playing partners.
Players on arrival to the clubhouse must report to the desk, swipe in for competition, enter name in competition book and place competition fee in the space provided.
Members who bring along guests must take responsibility for their behaviour and etiquette.
Players are responsible for the checking of their own scorecards, making sure the correct date; handicap and competition are on the card. It is not permitted for members to mark their own card.
A series of ‘opens’ are held during the year allowing members of Millicent or other golf clubs to compete for special prizes. An ‘open week’ normally takes place in late May. During the summer weekly opens take place on a day decided by the Company. All members are encouraged to compete in as many open competitions as possible. They are a great way to introduce friends to the course at special greenfee rates. All players must hold a current GUI handicap.
Etiquette
The management, employees and members of Millicent Golf and Country Club expect the highest level of courtesy and good behaviour on and about the course. As a member, you and your guests ought to behave in a thoroughly gentlemanly manner.
It is unnecessary to list all the aspects of appropriate behaviour in our club, however, as an introductory guide we would like to highlight the following:
On the golf course:
All the rules of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (generally referred to as ‘the rules of golf’) apply, without exception. A copy of these rules are included in your welcome pack.
- Appropriate courtesy and demeanour is essential so that all players can enjoy their game and compete fairly
- Appropriate dress should be worn.
- Slow play must always be avoided. Players behind must be let through if you are delayed looking for your ball.
- In every case, no more than five minutes can be spent searching for your ball
- No entry is allowed in any young plantations, (spinneys), marked either by:
- White Stakes which denote 'OUT OF BOUNDS' or
- Blue stakes with red tops: Familiarise yourself with the Local Rule Applying.
- Please advise your playing guests that only soft spiked shoes are allowed.
- Always repair divots and any plug marks you see on the green, whether left by you or others.
- Bunkers must be carefully raked after your stroke.
- Mark scorecards only after you leave the green.
- If dropping in for a few practice holes always call into the clubhouse to inform them of your intention to play.
- When practicing, a maximum of TWO golf balls can be used per player including when chipping onto the greens. This ‘two ball’ rule does not apply on the putting and chipping greens in front of the clubhouse.
Off The Course
Cordiality and courtesy are expected at all times towards employees, fellow members and guests.
Please note opening times and restrictions regarding clubhouse facilities as displayed.
The Handicap System
As the Club is affiliatied to the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI), our members’ handicaps are governed by the “CONGU” Unified Handicapping System, which is administered in Ireland by the GUI. This covers all the rules for the player, the Club and the Handicapping authority and is available in the form of a booklet, which is reviewed and published on a regular basis. (This booklet is enclosed in this pack)
The handicaps for Millicent Men’s Club are administered by the Handicap Committee, which is headed by the Handicap Secretary who is elected each year at the AGM.
Once elected into the Club, a new member can get a handicap in a number of ways:
- On production of a Handicap Certificate from an affiliated club of which he was/is a member within the previous 6 months,
- On production of 3 ‘singles’ cards, fully completed and signed by a club member, for a complete round of golf in Millicent Golf Course. In addition to the above, a record of membership of Golf Societies should also be furnished.
Members’ Handicaps are posted on the Club notice board. It is your responsibility to record on the score card your handicap on the day of play.
Details of how handicaps are adjusted are explained in the Congu handbook.
The Junior Section
A Junior Section currently operates in the club, on a trial basis. Around twenty juniors (all older than 12 And in full-time education) enjoy many of the privileges of full members including their own designated tee times and specific competitions.
Inter-club Competitions
The Club is constantly on the look out for players who are interested in playing inter-club competitions. Prior to all such competitions a sheet will be posted on the notice board for anyone interested in trials for the various competitions.
Currently we play in The Jimmy Bruen Shield, The Pierce Purcell Shield and The South Leinster Trophy.
Anyone interested in helping out on teams or has suggestions on team events or should notify the committee.
Only fully paid members who have returned FOUR singles qualifying cards will be considered to represent Millicent Golf Club in any of the team events.
